What have you discovered recently?

Discovery can be stimulated by the old as well as the new. In my home city of Dundee, we have the honour of hosting the wonderful RRS Discovery, the last 3 masted sailing ship built in the UK. This is directly alongside the new V&A museum of design. I’m always struck by these man-made objects side by side yet from different eras. Kengo Kuma’s beautiful building, which has no straight lines, is ultra-modern (the project manager told me the technology did not exist to construct this building until very recently), and yet at the same time ancient.

I recall the cable jointer ‘Big Jock’ in the Fort.

A story from the Fort in the 70’s: Big Jock, the Hydro Electric Cable Jointer. I recall the cable jointer 'Big Jock' in the Fort. He was a man of few words. As a fresh, curious seventeen year old I was doing my first six month placement with the craftsmen of the local Scottish Hydro Electric branch in Fort William, because it was my home town. Big Jocks morning routine was, firstly, supervising others to dig the joint hole precisely how he wanted it.

Broken Tripod leg lock on my Manfrotto Carbon Fibre travel tripod. Had this tripod for well over 10 years and one of the catches broke. Contacted Manfrotto and they were no longer holding stock for it because it had been discontinued.

Frustrating. I emailed them and thanked them for looking, and asked them if they recycle the parts, or could I get a discount / trade in if I got another. They told me that, since my email, they had a scour round the warehouse and had found a clamp - but it was only for the bottom leg - PRECISELY what I needed!

So, in a week, I had a new clamp and instructions from the repair tech on how to replace it. I now have my tripod back! I’ve always loved the Manfrotto products, but now I’m a lifetime fan. No need to recycle if you can repair! Outstanding service!

Bob Dylan releases 39th album The FT says > Bob Dylan’s new album Rough and Rowdy Ways is deft, teasing and footloose > The veteran musician roams to all points of the compass, fusing religion, myth and reality. Only 3 tracks on Apple Music just now but I like!

Fuji Velvia film simulation. 2 stops underexposed to best preserve the highlights in the sun and the water. Fuji 16mm prime lens closed right down to generate the starburst effect in the sun. Only bit of post processing was to slightly lighten the shadows in the foreground, other than that, it’s JPEG from the camera.

V&A Museum in Dundee, Scotland late afternoon today. Fuji Acros film simulation with red filter - jpeg from the camera.
